When Scott was very young, he was really into the old folk – and specifically was drawn to Woody Guthrie. He had everything of his he could get his hands on. But one day, he found one of the few records his parents had: it was a live album from a band called The Limeliters.
Scott loved everything about them – Glenn Yarbrough’s tenor and vibrato; Lou Gottlieb’s dry, sarcastic and sometimes self-deprecating Jewish-intellectual humor; and their energy, musicianship, and arrangements. They have been a huge influence on not just him, but the band as a whole.
A standout song from that record was their version of “Hard, Ain’t it Hard”. It really pushed the spirit of Woody’s original even higher, and it just seemed like such a great fit for Other Heroes – allowing them to push it even further still. It’s become a staple of their live performances.
